DLR - On the occasion of the traditional Bunpimay New Year of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, on the afternoon of April 14, Quy Nhon University organized a gathering for 109 Lao international students living and studying at the university.
The Bunpimay festival, also known as the “wrist-tying” New Year or the “Hốt Nậm” (water-splashing) festival, is typically celebrated from April 14 to 16 each year. During the festival, the people of Laos gather at temples and pagodas to participate in Buddhist ceremonies, pray, listen to monks’ teachings, perform Buddha bathing rituals, and splash water, while exchanging wishes for a happy, lucky, and prosperous new year.

At the gathering to celebrate the traditional Bunpimay New Year, on behalf of the Party Committee and the Board of Rectors, Dr. Dinh Anh Tuan, Vice Rector of Quy Nhon University, extended warm congratulations for the Bunpimay 2025 festival, wishing the Lao international students good health, happiness, and success. Dr. Tuan emphasized that the university would always prioritize and provide favorable conditions to ensure the students can study and live with peace of mind. The Vice Rector expressed his hope that the students would achieve excellent academic results and, upon graduation, contribute to building a stronger and more prosperous Laos.
Representing the Lao international students, Soukdaovanh Homsombath expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Board of Rectors of Quy Nhon University, its affiliated units, the Youth Union, the Student Association, and the leaders of various agencies, organizations, and associations for their care, support, and efforts in organizing the Bunpimay celebration for Lao students.

In a joyful atmosphere, the Lao international students celebrated their traditional Bunpimay New Year, embracing the unique cultural beauty of their homeland. Representatives from the Board of Rectors of Quy Nhon University, along with participating units, presented the Lao students studying and researching at the university with vibrant flower bouquets, meaningful gifts, and heartfelt wishes for a wonderful new year. The program featured lively activities, particularly cultural performances showcasing the rich traditions of the Lao people, performed by the Lao students. A highlight of the event was the traditional wrist-tying ceremony, during which the Lao students tied strings on the wrists of the university’s Board of Rectors, faculty members, and representatives of participating units, offering blessings for happiness, success, and good fortune. The occasion also provided a valuable opportunity for Lao and Vietnamese students to interact, share, and learn about the distinctive cultural heritage of both nations.

This event further strengthens the great cooperative and friendly relationship, fostering deeper unity and enduring bonds between the peoples of Vietnam and Laos in general, as well as among the faculty, staff, students, and Lao international students studying and researching at the university in particular.

The gathering was attended by representatives from Binh Dinh Medical College, Quy Nhon College of Engineering and Technology, the Binh Dinh Union of Friendship Organizations, the Binh Dinh Department of Finance, the Binh Dinh Provincial Police, the Binh Dinh Military Command, the Binh Dinh Provincial Youth Union, and the Vietnam-Laos Friendship Association.
Representing Quy Nhon University were Dr. Dinh Anh Tuan, Vice Rector, along with representatives from the leadership of various units, including the Office of Student Affairs and Business Relations, the Office of Science, Technology, and International Cooperation, the Youth Union, the Student Association, as well as representatives from the faculties and departments with Lao students, and the 109 Lao international students currently studying at the university.
