A seminar on "Developing the master’s program in Applied Data Science" was held at Meeting Room 1, Quy Nhon University (QNU) on the morning of November 28, 2020. The workshop aimed to listen to the proposals of those interested in the implementation and development of the Applied Data Science Master's program currently run at QNU.
Attending the seminar, on the side of QNU, were Assoc.Prof.Dr. Do Ngoc My - Rector, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Dinh Hien - Vice Rector, Dr. Nguyen Huu Xuan - Deputy head of Postgraduate Training Department, Dr. Le Xuan Vinh - head of Higher Education Department, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Tien Trung, head of Science, Technology & International Cooperation Department, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Le Cong Trinh, head of Mathematics & Statistics Department, Dr. Le Xuan Viet, head of Department of Information Technology, lecturers of 3 Departments of Mathematics & Statistics, Information Technology, Engineering & Technology and on the side of technology companies, were Mr. Nguyen Ngo Duy Binh - Director of TMA Solutions Binh Dinh, Dr. David Levett, Data Science expert of TMA Solutions, Nguyen Ngoc Tam Mac, AI team leader of Quy Nhon Software FPT. The workshop was also attended by all the 2020 Class Master’s students of Applied Data Science.
Making the opening speech at the workshop, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Dinh Hien - Vice Rector emphasized the important role of the related parties in the implementation and development of the Master's Program in Data Science, especially the comments from technology companies in order to build a modern, synchronous, high-quality and practical training program.
General overview of the workshop
At the seminar, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Le Cong Trinh, head of Mathematics & Statistics Department summarized the training program and plan for Applied Data Science. Accordingly, Applied Data Science with the goal of training high-quality human resources in Data Science to meet the needs of today's society. With the 60-credit training program, Master’s students will have the background knowledge of Data Science and practice skills for practical application such as knowledge of numerical methods and statistical methods, statistics in data analysis; Knowledge and skills in developing, exploiting big data analysis software, detecting and solving problems posed in big data analysis problems, synthesizing, analyzing, interpreting data, and making predictive models in specific applications; developing students’ self-study and self-research, etc.

The workshop received some comments and proposals from representatives of the related parties, such as Mr. Nguyen Ngo Duy Binh, Dr. David Levett (from TMA Solutions Binh Dinh), Nguyen Ngoc Tam MSc (from FPT Software Quy Nhon), Dr. Le Xuan Vinh, Dr. Nguyen Huu Xuan (from the Postgraduate Training Department), Dr. Ho Van Lam (from the Department of Information Technology), Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Tien Trung, Vo Hoang Vi, Master’s student of Applied Data Science.

Through the workshop attendees’ comments, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Do Ngoc My, Rector of QNU, thanked the attendees for their very relevant and practical comments and proposals and requested the drafting committee of the program to make adjustments on the basis of the proposals in order to draw up the best program, which helps train highest-quality experts in applied data science to meet the needs of technology companies in the digital era.
The Master’s program in Applied Data Science run at QNU is currently sponsored by the VinGroup Innovation Fund (VinIF). Each year, VinIF will award a maximum of 10 scholarships worth 120 million VND ($US ….) each, for excellent Master’s students of Applied Data Science. University graduates of Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Mathematics Pedagogy, Math-Informatics, Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, and some other related programs and some others (as prescribed) may apply for the Master’s program in Applied Data Science.
