1. General information about the Department and its logo
The Department of Chemistry, whose predecessor was the Geochemistry Department of Quy Nhon University of Education, was founded in 1990. Its original mission was to train bachelors of Chemistry. However, due to the demand of human resources of the provinces in the Central Coast and the Central Highlands, and its later assignment to training students of organic engineering & petrochemicals, Chemistry and Chemical Technology. In order to meet the needs of highly-qualified human resources of the region and the whole country, in 2012, the Department offered Master programs in Theoretical Chemistry and Physicochemistry. And then in 2016, the Department began offering doctoral programs in Theoretical Chemistry and Physicochemistry. In addition to the work of training, the Department also has the tasks of scientific research and technology transfer to meet the requirements of Binh Dinh province and the whole country.
2. Functions and tasks
The tasks of the Department of Chemistry are to train the human resources at university and postgraduate levels, conduct scientific research, diseminate knowledge and facilitate technology transfer in the field of chemistry with a view to effectively serving the sustainable development of the country, especially the South Central Region and the Central Highlands, contributing to the advancement of the society.

7. Achievements recorded in training, scientific research and international cooperation
With more than 27 years of its founding, the Department of Chemistry has trained more than 1,800 bachelors of chemistry education, 1,200 engineers of organic technology - petrochemical and chemical engineering, 600 bachelors of chemistry and nearly 100 masters of chemistry. With such great contributions, the Department of Chemistry was honored with a certificate of merit from the Prime Minister, and many certificates of merit from the Minister of Education and Training, and the Chairman of Binh Dinh People's Committee.
As regards scientific research, only in the last 5 years, the Department of Chemistry has completed 9 State-level projects (Nafosted), 9 Ministry-level projects, 03 provincial level projects, 25 at University-level projects. The Department’s lecturers have had 69 articles published in international journals, 197 articles in national journals and 05 textbooks for university teaching published in prestigious publishers. In addition, the Department’s lecturers have achieved some outstanding achievements: 01 project winning the "Vietnam Young Talent Award" at the Ministry level (2012 - 2013); 01 lecturer was selected as one of 70 typical young scientists of the country to meet the Prime Minister in September 2015; 01 lecturer is the official delegate to participate in the "2nd Young Talent Congress" organized by the Central Youth Union (2015 - 2016); 01 lecturer won the title "The first Typical Intellectual on Science and Technology of Binh Dinh province" (2015-2016).
The Department is working in scientific research cooperation with the Solid Chemistry Laboratory of Ewha Womans University, Korea and the Laboratory of Computational Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, KU Leuven University, Belgium. The Department is also expanding its undergraduate degree program and research collaboration with Prince of Songkla University, Thailand and a Masters’ degree program from Chiao Tung National University, Taiwan. The Department has developed and successfully implemented the VLIR-UOS project (2012-2014, code: ZEIN2012-Z129) between Quy Nhon University and KU Leuven University to develop the advanced European-standard Master's program specializing in theoretical chemistry and physiochemistry and a Laboratory of Computational Chemistry and Simulation at Quy Nhon University. The Department is carrying out the Team project funded by VLIR-UOS (2016-2019, code: ZEIN2016PR431). Notably, in addition to the scientific exchange of lecturers, postgraduate students; research on shrimp waste water and flood water; The Team project has also trained 04 PhD students (02 belonging to “sandwiches”) whose scholarship is extracted from the project.
The work of scientific research of students is also increasingly focused on. With the guidance of experienced and highly qualified lecturers, the movement of “scientific research student” of the Department is always energized, increasing in quantity and quality. A lot of Chemistry students have participated in scientific research and won high prizes in National Scientific Research Student contests organized annually such as the VIFOTEC Award, the Ministry-level Award and the University-level contests.
The Students of the Department began participating in the 2006 National Chemistry Olympiad in the Group A. Since then, every two years, they have participate in the contest and always recorded great achievements and have always been ranked in the Top 5 of the universities specializing in Chemistry, Group A nationwide. Within the last 5 years, in 2012, the Department’s students were awarded 1 first prize, 2 second prizes, 1 third prize, ranked 5th among the delegations; in 2014, the students won 3 second prizes and 2 third prizes among the delegations, ranked 04 among the delegations; in 2016: they won 1first prize, three second prizes and 1 third prize, and were ranked 5th among the delegations,...
In the time to come, the Department of Chemistry will continue to send its lecturers to training institutions, both at home and abroad, for professional development, modernize the laboratory equipment to improve the quality of teaching, learning and doing scientific research for its lecturers, students, trainees and graduate students; to draw up some new specialized programs at all educational levelssuitable to the development trend and meet the needs of the society; To further promote special scientific research on projects oriented towards the application to life and technology transfer.
